Understanding Fixed Object Motorcycle Accidents

There are many different types of motorcycle accidents, including fixed-object motorcycle accidents. A fixed-object motorcycle accident is considered a motorcycle crash that involves a cyclist and an immovable object. Fixed or immovable objects include (but are not limited to):

  • Trees
  • Signposts
  • Guardrails or traffic barriers
  • Utility poles
  • Traffic signals
  • Lamp posts

While these collisions can have devastating results, understanding the dynamics involved can help victims and their families know what to expect when pursuing legal action. Below, we will discuss the types of fixed-object motorcycle accidents, accident statistics, and more.

Fixed Object Accident Stats

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), nearly 20% of motor vehicle fatalities in 2020 were caused by fixed-object accidents, and in 2020, there was an 18% increase in the number of fixed-object collisions. In total, 8,603 people died in fixed-object crashes.

IIHS research also suggests that, in 2020, trees were the fixed object in 46% of collisions that resulted in death. The breakdown for other objects involved in fixed-object crash fatalities is as follows:

  • Utility poles, 11%
  • Traffic barriers, 9%
  • Embankments, 5%
  • Ditches, 4%
  • Fences, 3%

Types of Fixed Object Collisions

The two main categories of fixed object collisions are end-on and sideswipe collisions. End-on collisions involve a motorcycle hitting an object head-on or from the side at an angle. Depending on the size and speed of the motorcycle, this type of crash can cause severe damage to both the rider and their bike.

Sideswipe collisions occur when a motorcycle passes an immovable object too close or at too high a speed, resulting in either partial contact or full contact with the object. This often occurs when riders attempt to take curves too quickly or do not provide themselves with enough room to maneuver around obstacles safely.

Liability for Motorcycle Collusions with a Fixed Object

In many cases, fixed object accidents can be caused by rider negligence, the negligence of other drivers, weather conditions, mechanical issues, and a host of other issues. Common causes include:

  • distracted driving or riding (such as texting, being distracted by passengers, etc.),
  • intoxicated riding (either under the influence of drugs or alcohol),
  • speeding,
  • following other vehicles too closely,
  • clipping a motorcycle (causing the rider to lose control of their vehicle),
  • overcorrection while turning corners, and
  • improper gear selection (i.e., choosing too high a gear).

Injuries & Consequences

Fixed object collisions often result in serious injuries, especially if the rider was going at a high speed. However, injuries and their severity can vary based on case-specific details. Common injuries in fixed-object motorcycle accidents include:

  • broken bones,
  • internal organ damage,
  • spinal cord injuries,
  • traumatic brain injuries,
  • neck injuries,
  • road rash, and
  • lacerations.

In some cases, these injuries can be life-threatening and may require extensive medical care and rehabilitation. Furthermore, they can lead to long-term physical impairments that limit mobility and reduce the quality of life for accident victims and their families alike. If you are involved in a motorcycle accident, you should seek medical attention immediately.
